THE HUMBLE CHEESE toastie is one of the world’s best comfort foods, but to have a truly perfect, transcendent toastie experience, you can’t just bang it into the George Foreman any old way.

Whether you’re toasting it in a sandwich maker or doing it American-style in a dry frying pan, here are some tips to ensure you get a great toastie, every time.
Let’s talk about bread.

People like to show off with fancy breads, but Jeremy Lee of The Guardian says that sourdough burns “too easily along the crust”, thus ruining the whole thing.
What you really want is a loaf of “good” white bread, not too thick.

Sharp cheddars are always a great bet, but cheese toastie experts also recommend Swiss Gruyere if you’re feeling swish.
According to YouTuber Laura Werlin, the biggest mistake people make with toasties is using big wedges of cheese. She recommends grated cheese, which is all well and good, but we would put forward that thinly slicing your chosen cheddar is the way to go for a perfect melt.

Andrey Datsenko, the owner of a cheese toastie café in London, tells The Telegraph that three to five minutes should be enough – but it depends on the bread and cheese you have chosen.
Ideally, the toastie should be crispy on the outside, but the inside should be a gooey, melty mess. Yum.
